JOHN Rostill has said he will "do anything" for the parents of six babies whose deaths prompted the inquiry - but admitted this would be "scant consolation" for them.

The trust chief executive met the bereaved parents yesterday and on Tuesday to discuss the results of the inquiry findings. He said: "We are trying to do everything we can to ease their pain."

"We realise that anyone who loses a baby in any circumstances feels the most profound sorrow and loss, " he added.

"Nothing we do can reverse mistakes that have been made in the past but we can all - as midwives, doctors or managers - learn from those mistakes.

"We appreciate it is also a difficult time for all the staff involved and we need to make sure they receive our full support."

He went on: "This is a terrible time for the parents because they're reliving it all again. They have my deepest sympathy and I will do anything I can for them but I do accept that it's scant consolation to them."

Trust chairman, Michael O'Riordan, said: "On behalf of the trust board I must express our deepest sympathy to all the families involved for the tragic loss they have suffered.

"Thoughout this difficult time, everything possible has been done to ensure that they have been included in the internal and external investigations, kept informed of developments and given a chance to ask questions."

He added: "We accept the findings of the report and will work with our NHS partners and the people we care for on a way forward for maternity services in Wyre Forest and the rest of the county."
