YOUR reporting of my views on the Greig Centre (Chronicle, October 27) is accurate but I begin to worry I may appear too critical of the trustees.

I believe they have done their best, although it has been far from adequate, and they should be released from their burdensome task, which may be one that is impossible to complete.

One of the reasons I have brought up this matter now is to find out if the people of Alcester really do want a community centre - before we lose the one we have.

If they do, are they prepared to use it? I have not seen much support for my views in print, frankly, even though some people express support personally.

Maybe people do not know what a community centre does. I suggest they go to The Pavilion and speak to Shirley Ricketts, co-ordinator for Alcester Opportunities, which is a small community centre.

Like the trustees of the Greig, I want supportive action, not just empty words.

If people are not going to support a community centre, then the best thing to happen is to bulldoze the main building, then sell the site for houses.

Perhaps a small part could be reserved for a new swimming pool and its maintenance, which is what the survey of the Conway Estate people came up with, which led to the formation of Alcester Opportunities (but not a swimming pool, alas.)

My main concern is for the youth club and its continuation, not the Greig. I have no worries there will be a demand for a youth club as it has been going for 25 years, even if there wasn't always a building for it.

I do not want to bully the Greig trustees, after all I have no position in the town at all, save as a volunteer youth worker.

But I am seriously worried Alcester will lose a huge asset, the Greig Community Centre, due to incompetence, apathy and ignorance from all of us.

It's no good just blaming the trustees, the whole community must take a part. We must grow up and take a part in our own town's life or lose it. Don't make the Greig trustees a scapegoat, it's not fair on them.

It might help if we had some new ones. But not me, I've done my turn.
