SIDNEY Giles, from Little Lane, Bromsgrove, would have ample time to reflect on his misdemeanours when he was sentenced to a month's jail at Worcester for twice having been found guilty of using foul language in his own home, but within earshot of the public at large. Deciding to give him a sharp lesson, Bromsgrove magistrates heard he had committed the offences last month but had 16 previous convictions for the same crime. He was also fined £2/0/3 (£2.1) including costs and given no time to pay.

THE cost of keeping a pauper at Droitwich workhouse during the past half year had been 8/7 (43p) per head or, excluding officers' wages, 6/9 (34p) per week. The figures included all repairs and charges to the institution.

BROMSGROVE Council looked set to pay £1,200 to buy from the Ecclesiastical Commission, six acres of land in the town centre for use as a much-needed recreation ground. The council was proposing to add a further quarter acre or so by utilising part of the old stone breaking yard adjacent to it. However, the purchase raised the question what was to happen to the 1 acre Crown Close bought a few years ago by the council as a recreation area and "green lung" for the town. One possibility being considered was to offer it back to the church authorities.
