MR P Bunce (You Say, Tuesday, November 2) was absolutely right to point out my technical error regarding fox control.
I should have stated that under sections 98 and 99 of the Agricultural Act 1947 and the Agricultural (Scotland) Act 1948 the fox is clearly regarded as a pest. However, numerous dictionaries do actually include the fox in their description of the word vermin.
As a point of interest, it was a Labour Government that passed the Agricultural Acts of 47 and 48 but wisely refused to ban hunting in 1949.
I trust Mr Bunce will accept my sincere apologies for any confusion I may have caused him. We all have a duty to be absolutely correct even with the most minor details in this serious debate.
JON BURGESS, Malvern.
