MANAGERLESS Pershore Town were left in further turmoil yesterday following the resignation of the club's director of football Richard Anson for personal reasons.

Anson's shock departure from the struggling Midland Combination Premier Division outfit comes less than a month after Nigel Russell was sacked as manager.

Town are third from bottom in the division after losing 10 of their opening 15 league games.

Businessman Anson arrived at the club at the start of the season after enjoying lengthier stints at Malvern Town and Gravesend in similar footballing roles. He then took charge of first-team affairs when Russell left.

He said: "My decision has nothing to do with anyone or anything untoward at the club, although I believe that whoever takes the job on, in whatever role, has a massive job on their hands.

"The club has been in decline for too long and the seeds of that decline were sown several years ago and not now. I didn't fully appreciate that or the size of the task when I took it on."

Town chairman Graham Merchant said Anson's decision came as a shock and it is now vital the club bring in the right man.

Glen Brotherton takes temporary charge on Saturday at Massey Ferguson but a permanent appointment could be made next week.
