PAUL Sampson's first job for Worcester will be to gun down the club he snubbed.

The winger, who has impressed during a brief trial period for Worcester Warriors, has today signed on at Sixways until the end of the season.

And the 27-year-old could yet line up against Leicester Tigers in the Zurich Premiership on Saturday -- after turning down advances from the Welford Road side.

Sampson played in Worcester's 42-15 victory over Sale's 'A' team on Monday night, scoring two tries and satisfying Sixways coaches John Brain and Andy Keast that the former Premiership ace is back to his best.

The ex-Wasps and Bath star won three England caps at his peak but a knee injury while on national sevens duty put him out of the game for a full season.

However, after proving his fitness in a loan spell with Bath last season and then in the Super League with the London Broncos this year, Sampson is desperate to get back to the top level and Worcester are keen on giving him the chance.

"Paul is a proven player at Premiership level," said Brain, Worcester's director of rugby. "He has had a bad knee injury but he's come back from that and is very, very fit now. He's certainly got his pace back and there's no doubt about his finishing.

"What we were looking for was a winger with pace who could finish and there aren't many better around than Paul."

Brain admitted that Leicester were interested but added Sampson was keen to play week in, week out.

"Paul knew that he might play when Leicester had internationals out of their side," said Brain. "However, he knew that if he came to Worcester, he was likely to be involved week in, week out."

With Worcester now without Ben Hinshelwood because of international duty plus injury doubts over James Brown (neck), Tommy Hayes (calf), Thomas Lombard (knee) and Thinus Delport (knee), the winger looks set to be involved against the Tigers.
