THE fight against anti-social behaviour in Warndon will soon take another step when young people are given a shelter to meet in.

It will end a year-long plan to stop children causing a nuisance outside people's homes - but a parish council member has warned that the facility will be taken away if anti-social behaviour continues.

Worcester City Council community safety officer Tracy Reck said the shelter - costing about £10,000 - should be in place next to the Lyppard Grange Centre by the end of this month at the earliest.

"It will consist of a steel canopy with solar lighting and benches with room for about 16 people.

"It's all about creating a space young people can identify with. The community will expect them to be in that area, rather than outside shops or people's houses where they've congregated before.

"The Warndon community seems to be very much in support and I've been pleasantly surprised that most people have said they believe much of the anti-social behaviour has been caused because young people have had nowhere to go," said Ms Reck.

Warndon parish council member David Eastwood said the shelter should only be given to youngsters on a conditional basis.

"It has to be a deal between us and them, so if they tread over the line and if we continue to have aggravation we can take it away.

"Kids respond to a set limit. There has to be a line over which they know they can't step."

But county councillor John Buckley said people should not be so quick to dismiss the idea.

"The majority of young people in this estate are fine and a credit to their community.

"Unfortunately, there are always one or two who let them down," he added.
