READERS concerned for the welfare of a pensioner who has spent the autumn camping on Pitchcroft were alarmed when his Union Jack tent disappeared this week.

But Derek "Jonah" Jones is apparently sleeping in shop doorways in Worcester City centre.

Workers with the homeless say they are still struggling to find the 67-year-old a roof over his head.

The Evening News reported last week how the multiple sclerosis sufferer had been camping on Pitchcroft for three months as floodwaters continued to rise.

Many people have contacted this newspaper concerned about Mr Jones's welfare since his tent disappeared, but it appears his plight has not been eased.

Sue Leach, of Worcester Rough Sleepers, said an old friend had offered Mr Jones a place in his garage last week, but that had not worked out.

She said: "He's back sleeping rough. He's talking about going back to Pitchcroft but at the moment he's just been sleeping in shop doorways.

"It's just so frustrating because at his age he just can't cope in a hostel."

Ms Leach added several agencies, including the council and private tenants, were doing what they could to end his ordeal, but it was difficult to house him in a hostel because he wouldn't be parted from his dog, Rusty. Most night-shelters won't accept dogs.

Senior housing officer at Worcester City Council Mike Morris said he was aware there were still problems, but the council was doing all it could to resolve the situation.

He said: "We have tried everything to help this gentleman."
