Sadly, as foreshadowed here last week, the village bonfire and fireworks display planned for Croft Farm tomorrow (Saturday) is off. The immediate cause of the cancellation was the organisers' inability to obtain affordable insurance cover - premiums of £250 were quoted for the event, despite its record of there never having been any accident or claim since its revival some ten years ago. The state of the field after the recent rain (six inches in West Malvern in October!) also contributed to the reluctant decision. However, organisers say they hope to revive this popular village event next year.

Despite this disappointment, however, there will be plenty going on in the village next week. Lovers of ghoulies and ghosties and things that go bump in the night could be in for some thrills on Thursday, November 11, when the recently formed West Malvern Drama Group will be conducting its Spooky Evening in the Brewers 'Armpit'. For more details or to book a (free!) seat, ring 567411 or 567328. Note the day - it is on Thursday, not Friday as stated in the latest Hills Echo.

Saturday, November 13, will see the last cricket club quiz of 2004, which will take place at the village hall starting at 8pm, with all the usual popular features. For details and table bookings contact Lorna Dudley on 565422.

On a more sombre note, next Sunday, November 14, West Malvern British Legion will be holding its annual Remembrance Day Service at St James's Church at 6.30pm.

Afterwards, at its HQ in Lower Road, the legion will be presented with a Book of Remembrance. Containing details of all those from West Malvern who lost their lives serving their country from the beginning of World War I to the present day, the book is the product of years of research by Anna and Tim Brazier. There will also be presentations to people who have given valuable support to the legion's annual Poppy appeal over many years. An invitation is extended to everyone to attend.
