I LIKE to listen to the bells of Evesham playing on a Wednesday evening, on a Sunday morning for service, and on the other occasional times when they are performing. In the various places where I have lived it was common to hear the bells ringing for both religious and community events.

As I walked my dog in the park over the last few months, I can't help noticing that the quality of the Bell Towers' output seems to have significantly dropped. Is there a problem?

I seem to remember there being an article in The Journal a while ago about a new machine to play the bells. Is this malfunctioning?

The Bell Tower must be the biggest noisemaker in town and I wouldn't be surprised if there are complaints if this cacophony of sound continues. Obviously I'm not a musical expert but even I can tell the difference between a nice rhythmic tune and a clatter. I would previously have argued 100 per cent for the bells but now feel that some complaints might be justified. Surely someone must take responsibility for this din!

I was, however, even more surprised last week to not hear the bells playing at all.

As I walked through the park and under the tower I listened out but heard nothing! Has there now been some kind of terminal mechanical breakdown?

The Bell Tower must be the most famous place in Evesham, with its picture appearing on the majority of items connected with the town, so it seems such a pity that its splendid and majestic sounding bells are not being allowed to perform to their potential.
