A REMEMBRANCE Day charity social evening to benefit the ex-service community and raise the profile of the Royal British Legion is to be held at Kidderminster Town Hall.

The event on November 11 will feature music from 1950s rock and roll tribute artist Bob Mallett, as well as a performance on pipes and drums by Tom Flannagan.

Kidderminster soprano Margaret Peters is also set to sing Land of Hope and Glory and the national anthem, while a raffle will be held and Stourport disc jockey, Soundchasers, will be spinning popular tunes from the 1940s and 1950s.

Organiser Steve Yapp, who helped set up the charity Operation Homeland, which raises cash for charities serving the interests of the ex-service community, including the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Kidderminster War Memorial Conservation Trust, said he was hoping to sell as many tickets as possible.

The 41-year-old, who is also standard bearer for the Kidderminster branch of the Royal British Legion, added he hoped the evening would become an annual event.

"If we could get a couple of hundred people there that would be great - if we get a full house it would be even better."

He added all the artists were performing free of charge and proceeds of the event, which is free to ex-service personnel, would be donated to Operation Homeland and the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

"Margaret Peters was a last minute addition to the programme, which was brilliant."

He added his daughters, Hannah, 11, and Sophie, nine, would read the poem, The Inquisitive Mind of a Child, on stage.

"It's a mother and daughter sort of poem and is quite emotive," he said. "It will be a lovely finish to the evening."

Tickets for the event, which starts at 6pm, will be on sale at the town hall, Hunters Tobacconists in Kidderminster and Bewdley Books.
