CHILD molester Paul Roberts has been jailed for 12 years for sex attacks on two schoolgirls.

He raped a 12-year-old while holding a pillow over her head and assaulted a 10-year-old after handcuffing her to a stool and stripping her, Worcester Crown Court heard.

Married Roberts, aged 47, of Goldsmith Walk, Offmore Farm, Kidderminster, was convicted of two rapes, two indecent assaults and five counts of downloading child porn on to his computer.

He pleaded guilty to taking an indecent photograph of his rape victim and to possession of a collection of indecent photographs of children. He was sentenced last Thursday.

Judge Michael Mott told him: "There is no doubt that for some time you have had a sexual interest in young girls, exacerbated and fuelled by your descent into the corruption of internet pornography."

The judge said shackling a schoolgirl to a stool illustrated the "disgusting story" heard by the jury over the week-long trial. His two rape convictions against the other victim were samples of his "repeated violation" of the 12-year-old.

Jobless Roberts, who had not worked for 10 years after claims he was disabled, was cleared of sexually assaulting a third girl, who is now aged 21.

The rape victim told police that he first photographed her while she was clothed before getting her to expose herself for another picture. Police seized it from Roberts's home.

The other victim alleged he also took her to a shed and got her to strip in front of a group of young men.

Roberts was accused by prosecutor Mark Wall of trying to mislead police by claiming health problems ruled him out as an active sex attacker but a home video played to the jury showed Roberts running. He could also cycle 20 miles a day and go fishing.

Mr Wall told him during cross-examination: "The abuse of children was an outlet for your sex drive." Bondage photographs found on Roberts's computer were echoed by handcuffs seized at his home.

Roberts, a member of the Mormon church since 2001, confessed he talked about sex aids to one girl but insisted she was mature for a 13-year-old. He "loved her to bits" but not in a sexual way.

Samples of the defendant's collection of porn were shown to the jury.

The rape victim's mother told the court her daughter had commented: "Trouble is all I'm good for."

The girl had tried to run away from home. Doctors found her with old injuries consistent with sex abuse.

Richard Carron, defending, said Roberts had been held in custody since his arrest in March. He had previous convictions for robbery but not for sex offences.

Roberts was banned from working with children when he is released and ordered to sign the sex offenders' register for life.
