The road was sealed off to traffic and pedestrians from Lion Hill to the island at High Street as scenes of crime officers began an investigation.
Detective Inspector Paul Williamson of Kidderminster police said: "This is a particularly nasty assault with no apparent provocation and at this time I am appealing for people who may have been out drinking in the area to contact police as they may have information that will assist my enquiries."
Anyone with information about the incident should contact Kidderminster police on 08457 444888 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
