WORCESTER Warriors hope to pack a punch in their Premiership campaign next season and yesterday saw the countdown get under way.

The National One champions were back at Sixways for the start of pre-season training under fitness trainer Phil Richards.

There was a welcome return to training for Duncan Roke, sidelined for much of last season with various knee injuries, and the full back expects to start running next month.

Yesterday, though, was all about getting back to the grind as the squad look forward to their opening Premiership clash with Newcastle Falcons on September 4.

"We know we've got to move up another level because we're in the Premiership now," said Richards.

"There is no naivety here at Worcester. We know exactly what we've got to do and we are putting in the groundwork now.

"We've got about 14 players back for training because many of the new signings will trickle back in the next few weeks. We've obviously also got a number of players away on international duty.

"The weights this year are more brutal than last. Certainly we need to go up another level in strength, in fitness and in mental attitude.

"Some of the guys were crashed out in the car park yesterday after training. The players will be tested to their limits but I think, like last season, the boys will enjoy the training."

Richards flew out to America after the season ended to get tips from US Olympic shot-putter Adam Nelson and some American Football players.

"It's all about getting new ideas, bringing them back and introducing them," added Richards.

"All the guys know what to expect this season. We are training with a real purpose."
