WOMEN are flocking to join a fan club dedicated to celebrating the talents of Evening News weatherman Paul Damari.

Mr Damari - with his made-for-radio voice and his poetic descriptions of drizzling rain and "atmospheric autumnal mists" - has only attracted one male subscriber so far.

The highly-respected, and now it seems, much yearned-for forecaster, has been the focus of all this female attention since his fan club was set up two years ago. The fan club is growing and now has more than 50 members.

His friend, John Dallimore, who built the weatherman's "bunker" for his radio broadcasts, set up the website.

"We have got quite a few subscribers to the fan club, and they are spread out over Herefordshire and Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, and Shropshire.

Subscribers

"And all of the subscribers are women, apart from me, more or less!" said Mr Dallimore.

In the future, Mr Dallimore hopes that a Damari Convention will be set up for his adoring fans.

Mr Dallimore added that a fan club was needed because people - women - wanted autographs and information about their favourite forecaster. Apparently, his 27 broadcasts a day, on three different radio stations, was not satisfying the demand for the celebrity weatherman.

On hearing about his female fan base, Paul said he was taken aback with the interest people were showing him, and no, he didn't see himself as a sex symbol.

Ordinary man

"I think I'm quite an ordinary man with a normal life, but I was astonished and surprised that there were quite a lot of people who wanted to join my fan club," said the 53-year-old, who lives in Barbourne, with his wife, Sandra.

Paul hopes to use the fan club as a tool to help raise money for charities - something he hopes to immerse himself in at the beginning of next year.
