TWO weeks into the junior rugby season and the youth sections at Malvern Rugby Club are reporting a upsurge in interest by local youngsters wanting to take up the sport at Spring Lane.

Of interest are the number of girls are joining the Malvern Angels, particularly those aged between nine to 12 years old who are very keen to further their tag rugby experience outside their school environment.

Other groups that have expanded beyond all expectations are the U7 and U8s squads of the Malvern club's Youth Development Section.

Thirty-six aspiring young rugby players have signed up for the club's two foundation youth rugby teams, forcing the club's management to bring in extra coaches and support staff to help organise the two squads.

Malvern RFC spokesman Gary Tolley said: "The arrival of so many new faces and the return of nearly all of last years players to take on the challenges of the new season is very encouraging.

"Squad managers are reporting an up-turn in numbers and the involvement of parents wanting to be involved as coaching assistants or to help-out behind the scenes."

However, Mr Tolley did highlight an age group squad where there was a surprising fall in numbers. "The U12 squad has taken a bit of a knock this time around. The numbers are down because the performers have to choose between playing junior soccer or junior rugby on Sundays. We don't see this as a long-term problem because we have Simon Bott as head coach for the squad, who has the knack of bringing the very best out of the youngsters whether at training and in matches.

"In addition when the Malvern Gazette Super 12's Challenge series gets underway, we shall see a larger influx of rugby playing 11 and 12 year olds when they see what is on offer for them."
