THE Worcestershire Golf Club ladies pulled off a remarkable double triumph when they won the Worcestershire and Herefordshire Ladies County Golf Association team championship last week, capturing both the best gross and best net trophies.

It is 21 years since the ladies completed the double and although they won the best nett in 1991, it is 19 years since they won the more prestigious gross trophy.

Twenty-four clubs from the two counties took part in the annual championship, which was first held in 1927. Eight first team county players were also on show for their clubs.

With all four scores counting in a medal round, Cathy Harris (seven handicap), Di Meakin (nine), Pat Catlin (10) and Chris Urry (11) returned a gross 332 to edge out Kidderminster by three shots. And in a closely fought net competition, they pushed Dudley into second place by five shots.

Heather Morgan, a member of The Worcestershire for 45 years and who played in teams which won the nett prize on five previous occasions, said: "I think it's absolutely fantastic. In years gone by we entered two sides, one in each category which effectively doubled our chances of winning, so for one team to have won both is a huge honour.

"What the team has done sets a standard for both the club and county."

Team captain Cathy Harris added: "It really was a fantastic achievement when you consider all the county players included in the other teams.

"We are all very proud to have played a part in the club's success, especially when the event was staged at our own course."

Best gross: 1 The Worcestershire 332, 2 Kidderminster 335, 3 Droitwich 339, 4 Stourbridge 349, 5 Kings Norton 351.

Best net: 1 The Worcestershire 295, 2 Dudley 300, 3 Blackwell 302, 4 Droitwich 307, 5 South Herefordshire 307.
