PERHAPS I need to clarify my position to put the minds of Keith Phillips and Simon Gardner (Your Letters, September 3) at rest.

Far from suggesting closure of the town post office and the provision of extra parking etc, I was simply trying to quote the plans of our council.

I find it hard to understand that these two issues along with improved toilet facilities, form the bulk of the town's ten year plan

As Mr Gardner says, the post office is central and convenient, employing 70 plus people, all of whom contribute to shops in town. Why is the council so keen to relocate it?

We are told by the council that as part of the plan, more retail space is required, including a roof-top caf.

Surely, when so many shops have closed and remained empty for so long in the town, the plan should be to re-establish those first.

When all the charity shop leases are up, priority should dictate they are leased to the sort of business that will encourage people into the centre again.

We all contribute via local tax, we can make suggestions either directly or via the questionnaires we are sent, but at the end of the day, it is the duty of the council, who are employed by us, to actively go out and sell Malvern.

This shouldn't be too much to ask, but as yet, I can see no evidence that we have turned the corner.

Perhaps a three-year challenge would be more appropriate. Let's see every retail shop in Malvern open, reduce the number of charity shops to just one or two, with top quality outlets in the place of the others.

If they can stay in business for 18 months, then, perhaps, more ambitious plans could be put forward.

PAUL WRIGHT, West Malvern Road, Malvern.
