SECURITY cameras should be installed at Malvern Link railway station, says a regular rail user.

Ray Morgan, of Fromes Hill, uses the station several times a month but has been increasingly fed up at damage to cars.

His own car has been vandalised on three occasions, most recently when the hub caps were stolen.

Mr Morgan has written to Central Trains, which is responsible for the station, urging it to install security cameras, but he was told the company currently has no plans to do so.

Mr Morgan contacted a Hereford-based security firm and was told that a suitable system could be obtained for as little as £5,000.

A contact in the fire brigade told him informally that the camera system could be installed on the side of the fire station tower, providing a good view of the station and car park.

Mr Morgan said; "The station is away from the main road and there are no houses nearby, there's no-one walking past it, so these vandals are unseen. A camera would make a difference."

Central Trains spokesman Ged Burgess said: "We've looked at the possibility of installing cameras at Malvern Link in the past. It's not off the agenda but it's at very early stages."

He said a useful system might cost in the region of £40,000, but could be tied in to the town's existing system to save running costs.

Meanwhile, Central Trains has promised to repair and reopen the waiting room at the station within a month. The room was vandalised on August 31 when thugs kicked the walls in and tried to set it on fire. The waiting room is now locked as the station is currently supervised for half days until more staff can be found.

Claire Barratt, Central Trains spokesman said the waiting room would be open soon.
