Colwall's Doreen Moore will be celebrating her 100th birthday on Tuesday.

She will mark the occasion with friends and staff at Evendine House nursing home, where she lives.

"I never expected to get to this age," said Miss Moore. "I now have 100 years of memories."

Miss Moore was born in Derby and was evacuated to Herefordshire with her two brothers during the First World War. She liked the county so much that she decided to stay.

"I never saw my father after the war," she said. "He died of meningitis but I remember him well though. He used to take me to the allotments every Sunday morning."

Miss Moore was a sales person at the Schweppes factory in Colwall for many years.

She moved to Evendine House four years ago and counts gardening and embroidery as her chief passions. Her handiwork is displayed all around her room.

Despite being profoundly deaf, she has learned to lip read so well that she can even distinguish between regional accents.

"I've known her since she first came to Evendine," said care assistant Sue Davies.

"She's a lovely lady and is looking really good for 100."
