ON a blustery day, Powick made the trip to local rivals West Malvern in the Worcester Saturday League Division One.

WEST MALVERN 0, POWICK 2

The game was always going to be a hard-fought contest and that was highlighted by some strong early challenges.

Powick were continually trying to play a short passing game but rain-swept conditions and West Malvern's long ball tactics limited this style. There were two changes from last week, Dave Beats and Pete Brannelly for Nick Kordas and Phil Skilton, who were both unavailable.

The first half saw no goals but several good chances go begging for Powick, who dominated play. Matt Cole, who with every game is growing in confidence, was unlucky to place an easy opportunity wide of the post. Joe Street was again unfortunate and missed several chances to put Powick ahead.

A stern half time talk and a change to Mike Cole up front supporting Stu Harvey saw the breakthrough. Captain Lee Henderson crossed from the left hand side to the far post for Stu Harvey to maintain his scoring with a powerful header from 12 yards.

More chances went begging for Powick before a second goal came from Mike Cole, who latched on to a long ball wide on the left-hand side of the goal and lobbed the keeper from 18 yards.

Dave Beats, Jason Howes, Kev Downes and Andy Collard all played well but Powick's man of the match was goalkeeper Steve Newman for a faultless display.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Powick are at home to Fernhill Heath. Meet at the ground at 2.15pm.
