PLANS are afoot to close the public desk at Pershore Police Station and relocate it to a contact community centre in the town.

Although no decision has yet been made, the possibility of a contact community centre with both police and council staff in Pershore's Wychavon Civic Centre is being explored.

Pershore Police Station would still remain open but not to the public said Inspector Steve Brooker, area commander for Wychavon.

He said: "Plans are being considered very seriously but no decision has been made as yet. The idea is to have more people to provide the public with a better service," he said.

Insp Brooker added that plans had been on the cards for a while because of the success of Evesham Contact Community Centre.

A feasibility study into the possibility began in March this year.

"We are exploring the options at the moment to see if it's reasonable to do it in Pershore," said Insp Brooker.

"We are working together with the police and the local authority to see if its feasible.

"I think we will have made a decision one way or another sooner rather than later."

Last April the Journal reported that more than 6,000 people came through the doors of Evesham Contact Community Centre in its first month.

The ECCC is a partnership between Wychavon District and Worcestershire County Councils, West Mercia Constabulary and Evesham Town Council.

Its aim is to provide a single point of contact for customers to have their questions answered.
