HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: The annual show took place on Bank Holiday Saturday, in glorious weather. It was one of the best shows the society has had in recent years and the standard and quantity of exhibits was commented on by the judges.

Takings were up on the door, raffle and teas. The main raffle prize was won by Martin Pritchard and the winners of the perpetual challenge trophies were:

Society's Cup for highest number of points in vegetable classes - J King and L Berry tied; Festival Cup for highest number of points in flower classes and National Vegetable Society Medal - Ray Fardon; Whitmore Cup for the best collection of vegetables - Mr F Whitcomb; Bill Humphries Cup for best onions, leeks or shallots - J King; D T Brown Cup for best dahlias - Mr D Williams; Domestic Cup - Mrs Molly Wise; Cheales Cup for preserves - Mrs M Fisher; George Collett Cup - Mrs B Nurstead; Buchan Cup - Mrs B Angel; Bloss Cup - Mrs Audrey Barham; Hadley Bowl - Mrs Sue Foster; Wine Cup - Mr J Gibson; Morris Rose Bowl - Mrs Christine Northing; Griffiths-Davis Cup - Miss Kirsty Manning; Gore Cup and G Cairns Cup - Master Adam Franks. Arbon Centenary Cup - Mrs Kate Pulham.

At the September meeting local naturalist Mrs Mornee Button gave a slide show and talked on A Woodland Year. She was thanked by Mrs Ruth Manning.

The competition for the month An Arrangement of Autumn Fruitfulness, was won by Eunice Russell.

Next month's speaker will be Neil Hook on the re-creation of Hanbury Hall and the competition will be A Flowering Pot-Plant.
