FLOWER AND PRODUCE SHOW: The Ilmington Show and the Horticultural Society's flower and produce show was held on the playing field on August Bank Holiday Monday. A warm, sunny pleasant day brought very many people to the village.

The show was opened by the May Queen, Daisy Kidd from Preston, and the visitors were entertained throughout the afternoon by the Shirley Scots Pipers and the A D Concert Band. The children enjoyed the climbing wall, the Punch and Judy Show and the giant puppets, and there were bouncy castles, performing dogs, fairground rides and many other games and stalls. The children's fancy dress was won by Christopher Brock, dressed as a dragon, with Lizhe Singleton second as a Sega dancer from Mauritius.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was the return visit of the Viking Warriors, who last year kidnapped the Rector and put him in the stocks. This year they kidnapped Michelle Williams, the new landlady of the Red Lion, and raised about £100 for charity from passing motorists.

The raffle was run by Ilmington School and raised £900 for school funds. A Mountain Bike was won by Fred Edmunds; microlight flight, Andrea Pennington of Upper Quinton; day for two at Stratford races, Lynne Hawkins, Halford; a radio alarm clock, Michelle Hardiman, Darlingscott, and many others.

The football tournament was won by a team from AMEC, a Stratford construction company, and the runners-up were Pure Genius, a team of Old Campdonians. The tug-of-war was won by Ilmington.

The pig roast boogie, which held in the marquee on the Saturday night to live music from Move It, followed by a disco, was organised by Clare Edmunds and raised more than £1,000 for Cancer Research.

The horticultural society's flower show had a record number of entries, and the children's entries were particularly good.

After last year's record of seven cups being one by Julia Gajny, this year the cups were more evenly distributed. Mr A A Wincote was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Banksian Medal for the most money won in prizes in the horticultural classes, the 1965 Challenge Cup and jointly with Mrs G Stebbings the Spencer Flower Challenge Cup.

The other trophy winners were: The RHS Junior Award of merit for potatoes grown in a bucket, John Wyles; the Ilmington Village Challenge Cup and the Challenge Cup for the best flower exhibit, Mrs H Finer; the Jubilee Cup and the Bertie Wyton Trophy, Fred Edmunds; Woodland Pottery Trophy and the Handicrafts Cup, G Stebbings; Christine Marland Cup, Mrs J Hughes; Esmee Lace-Williams Cup, Miss I Sabin; Hersey Flower Trophy, Mrs M Edmunds; Ladies Challenge Rose Bowl, Mrs R Shurey; Howard Arms Trophy, jointly, Karine Clifford, Danielle Casey, Holly Tremellen and Alice Brook; JJW Trophy, Mrs G Jennions; Goodenough Cup, Mrs D Stone; Winifred Holman Cup, Bryonie Owen; Section J prize, Grace Beecham; Section K prize, Katrina Eastgate.

In the handicraft classes there were two beautiful and much admired demonstration exhibits by David Greenwood, showing first the head and arm of his wife when swimming, carved in wood, and the plaster cast he made of her head before he began the carving.
