JACQUI Smith MP says "successive governments" have given a "clear decision" they will not build an "extensive and expensive bypass" around the western side of Studley (Advertiser, September 1).

At a packed meeting at the old Studley Village Hall, just a few years ago, Ms Smith correctly argued the Conservative Government had suspended action on the bypass because of the mess the public finances were in and no other reason.

She pledged her support for a western bypass.

Since that time, the public finances have made possible an extensive road improvement programme, including many bypasses.

At the time of the above meeting, Ms Smith argued the bypass would benefit the whole area, not just Studley.

So what happened to change her mind?

I wish she would also explain how Warwickshire and Worcestershire can possibly afford the tens of millions involved in what she describes as the "simpler" solution of an eastern bypass.

The people of Redditch and the whole area will bitterly regret the revocation of the "clear decision" to build an A435 bypass.
