SKATER hockey star Matt Willis is getting ready to take on some of the best in the sport.
Matt, aged 17, is the only Midlands player to be named in the 24-man Great Britain junior training squad for this weekend's U18s European Championships in Torbay.
The Droitwich Spa resident, who has been playing skater hockey for six years, is an integral part of the Redditch Rockets defence and has already represented England's north region at U13s, U15s and U18s level.
He was selected for the GB U18s from 70 hopefuls at trials in Halesowen in July and has since attended several training sessions with the squad.
Matt, who also coaches U12s at the Rockets, said: "I was quite surprised because it was how you played on the day and I didn't think I did a good trial but obviously I did something right."
His father, John, added: "He's a very strong defensive player, he's what they call a last man defender. He's very dependable."
