A BATTING gamble paid off to give Barnt Green CC First XI the runners-up spot in the Birmingham and District Premier League.

Lyndon Jones' side were set 216 to win at Knowle and Dorridge last Saturday and decided to throw caution to the wind and go for broke in their effort to leapfrog their opponents.

It came down to the last over but Green, aided by two sixes from the skipper, won by one wicket and left their hosts, in with a shout of pipping Wellington for the title before play, in third.

Knowle and Dorridge batted first and a partnership between Chris Howell (52) and Lee Marland (60) helped them post 215-4.

Richard Hall and Matt Dallaway put on 72 in the first 12 overs but the dismissals of James Golding and Richard Illingworth left an uphill task.

Adam Smith and Alan White perished in as Green gambled on runs, leaving them 17 to win off the last 12 balls, nine wickets down. Two sixes by Jones (38no) in the penultimate over sealed the game.
