THE identity of a farm worker who was crushed to death when a tractor rolled on top of him has been revealed by police.

David Phillips, of Dunley, near Stourport-upon-Severn, died after an accident on Sunday evening at D Paine and Sons Farm, in Witley Park, Great Witley.

The 58-year-old was ploughing a field at around 6.35pm when his tractor toppled over, throwing him out of the cabin, and then fell on top of him. He was killed instantly.

Mr Phillips was officially identified at 1pm yesterday and a post mortem was also carried out.

"David was a local man who had worked on the Witley Park Farm estate for over 30 years," said a statement from his family.

"He was hard working and very loyal.

"He has left a wife, three children, and six grandchildren to who he was devoted.

"He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. We would like to be left alone to grieve at this time."

The police and Health and Safety Executive are now investigating the incident.

"As this incident occurred at a remote location it is unlikely that there were any eye-witnesses," said a police spokesman.

"There may, however, be someone who was in the area who may have information helpful to our investigations.

"Anyone with information is asked to call 08457 444888, quoting 512S/130904."

County Coroner Victor Round has been informed and is expected to open and adjourn an inquest in Stourport-on-Severn, on Friday, September 17.
