A POPULAR Worcester community centre has closed, temporarily, for a £500,000 facelift.
The Tolladine Community Centre on Rose Avenue will be out of use for six months to allow workmen to replace the roof and add two new wings - a youth and nursery wing to the existing building.
Community worker Allan Poyner admitted that there would be upheaval for the groups that regularly use the centre, but the refurbishment had been welcomed by all.
"It is excellent news. We have been waiting for work to start for such a long time. It will be great for people to finally see their money being put to use," he said.
And groups that use the centre have been fund-raising for the last four years. Sure Start and Worcester City Council have provided the bulk of the cash.
The Tolladine Friendship Club, a lunch club that meets on Tuesdays, received more than they bargained for in the revamp when Ladbrokes donated over £2,000 so the group can hire a minibus to take members on country excursions, ending with a pub lunch.
