CONSUMERS in Hereford buy the second highest proportion of organic food outside London according to supermarket giant Sainsbury's.

The figures were released at the start of Organic Week this week.

The top 10 organic products bought by Sainsbury's shoppers are bananas, eggs, carrots, milk, yoghurt, bread, Royal Gala apples, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and butter.

"With Organic Week in full swing, it is great to see that the people of Hereford are such keen consumers of organic food," said Tony Sullivan, head of organics at Sainsbury's.

"We will continue to respond to our customers' needs by sourcing fresh, quality organic produce all year round."

Following the lead of young, health-conscious celebrities such as Gywneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, the figures also reveal that women aged 17-24 have almost doubled the amount of organic food they eat, with men of all ages significantly increasing their consumption.

Since 1998, the total UK organic market has trebled in value from £390m to more than £1bn and continues to grow at a rate of 10 per cent a year. An average of £1 in every £30 spent at Sainsbury's is spent on organic food.
