WORCESTER Hockey Club recorded their third Leominster Sixes' title in as many years as they triumphed against Gloucester in sudden death extra time during a tense final.

The Worcester side had started well in the group stages but lost to Gloucester 1-0 and only got through to the final stages as the best-placed runner up in the three groups.

In the semi-final, Worcester took on National League side Barford Tigers and an excellent team performance saw them stroll through to the final after a convincing 4-0 win.

The final was a close affair with Worcester coming back from 3-2 down in the final minutes of normal time to equalise and force 'golden goal' extra time.

All of the play in extra time came from Worcester with Alex Kotlarzewski failing to capitalise on a number of guilt-edged chances.

Martin Husbands, however, grabbed the hero's tag when he calmly beat two defenders and rolled the ball under a helpless keeper to win the title and score his third of the final.

Worcester consisted of Ian Ewers (captain), Lee Irish, Dave Irish, Reg Sharratt, Martin Husbands, Chris Adams, Mark Richardson and Alex Kotlarzewski.

Adams and Husbands were joint top scorers with 18 goals each during the day.

Meanwhile, Worcester had to be content with a 3-3 draw with Kidderminster despite a great start.

The home side were 2-0 up after 15 minutes but Kidderminster hit back following good midfield play by Bruce Baron and Simon Burkes.

Burkes reduced the deficit when he slotted home following a penalty corner routine. Then, Chris Sollom latched on to a defence-splitting pass from Tim Feline to level the score.

Good end-to-end play followed the resumption and Worcester re-took the lead with a deflected shot which gave Keith Wills no chance in the Kidderminster goal.

The visitors, however, were not to be denied and Burkes drew the Worcester defence down the right before slipping the ball to Feline who made no mistake with the equaliser.
