NOT only has the bus company reduced the services in my area but now it has increased the fares.

As from July 5 it has introduced a flat rate single fare for the holders of concessionary bus passes, the fare now being 50p, an increase of 3p for a single journey which, I suppose, is not too bad. But when you realise you have to pay 50p for the return journey as well, as against the 75p you previously paid that makes an increase of 25p.

I notice on all buses a statement to the effect that Worcestershire County Council subsidises the bus company. Malvern's Vision 21 Partnership is making a grant of just under £2 million pounds for extra bus provision and subsidies to improve transport.

What we need is a little competition. Perhaps the county council could run a minibus in this area, Madresfield Road and Pickersleigh Road. Perhaps we should look at what is on offer in Malvern. Community Action run a voluntary car scheme and a shoparound minibus now at reduced costs.

Why is there a need for a fare increase when the bus company receives so much help from local authorities?
