VANDALS have caused more than £1,000 worth of damage after trashing a football club.

Dick Widdowson, secretary of Archdale 73 football club, in Windermere Drive, Warndon, says he is angry and "fed up" with repeated acts of vandalism on the site.

"The last attack was on Sunday but I go around most days to see what's happened. I've found needles used by drug addicts in the past," he said.

In the latest incident, vandals ripped out a railing surrounding the site and used it as a battering tool, to smash a concrete dug-out.

"We had the concrete dug-out built after the last one was vandalised. We thought because it was made of concrete, it would be harder to demolish.

"But now even that's been smashed. The dug-out is used by the coaches and substitutes during matches.

"One chap said he was walking past when it was being vandalised but he didn't approach them because he was afraid he'd be beaten up.

"We've had to replace all the windows in the club with plastic ones because they kept getting smashed and the vandals have broken the garden benches as well.

"All ages use the club. We've got an under 12s team and a senior team. Everyone's really upset about it."

The club is currently negotiating a deal with neighbours Sainsbury's to swap sites.

In exchange for building on the Archdale ground, the store will build a new football club and pitch on its land.

While the building work is carried out, Mr Widdowson said Sainsbury's will foot the bill for the club to hold its activities on the county sports site in Droitwich Road, Worcester.

However, Mr Widdowson said that had also been targeted by vandals.

"The vandals have caused more than £1,000 worth of damage at Archdale's which the club won't want to pay for now we're moving. We've told the police about vandalism in the past but they don't really want to know. We're very angry about the whole situation."

A spokesman for Worcester police said: "We take all issues reported seriously, and we encourage the public to report all incidents, otherwise we cannot investigate or take action."

"The reporting of incidents also enables us to detect if there is a pattern to them and this is valuable in deploying our officers accordingly."
