ENERGETIC Wychavon youngsters showed they are good sports by scooping gold in last Sunday's Worcestershire Youth Games.

Under-13 netball players selected from Bredon Hill Middle School won all their pool matches against five other districts to be declared tournament champions.

Inter-Schools girls football tournament winners, Westacre Middle School, won the Under-12 event 2-0 after a nail-biting final against the best from Malvern Hills.

Wychavon also scooped gold alongside Redditch in the MLD girls' football with a team selected from the Vale of Evesham School.

Finally, Wychavon picked up two Fair Play Awards in the girls' Under-15 netball from Evesham High School Specialist Sports College and the girls' tag rugby from Droitwich High School Specialist Sports College.

Sports development officer Mark Williams said: "The Wychavon teams have been selected through a range of sources, including schools, inter-school tournaments, development squads and the Active Sports Programme.

"Special thanks go to Wychavon Leisure for their free swimming offer for competitors and all the team managers, coaches, teachers, schools, parents and especially the young people who contributed to making this such a fantastic event."

Organised by Worcestershire All Sports Partnership (WASP), competitors took part in the region's largest sports competition for young people supported by Sport England, the six districts, the LEA and UCW through the Lottery Sports Fund.

The sixth Games saw athletes aged between ten and 16 taking part in athletics, basketball, cricket, girls football, hockey, netball, girls tag rugby, mixed tag rugby and tennis.
