THE countdown is on for the launch of a major new modelling extravaganza to be staged at The NEC this summer.

Model Expo 2004, which takes place on Saturday, July 10 and Sunday , July 11 will cover all aspects of modelling, from radio-controlled cars, aeroplanes and boats to static displays and model engineering.

Leading names from right across the modelling industry are already lining up to showcase their top product ranges. A host of displays and demonstrations will also be on offer for enthusiasts and newcomers of all ages.

A packed two-day programme will include action spills and thrills on indoor and outdoor racing tracks, marine modelling demonstrations on an indoor pool, spectacular flying displays, a model engineering workshop with live steam area and plenty of opportunities for hands-on fun and excitement.

But the big emphasis will be on participation, with lots of activity for visitors of all ages to enjoy.

Exhibition director Peter Ward said: "We're taking an innovative approach to meet the needs of what is a massive sector, which boasts hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts across the country.

"It promises to be a huge success and we're aiming to create interest in all aspects of modelling by letting visitors have a go at everything from flying a model aeroplane to operating a small lathe.

"But this doesn't mean visitors won't be able to see the very finest examples of the model-makers craft at the show because a large area is dedicated to a traditional display of superb static models."

The "model workshop" will be equipped with all the latest machine tools, with skilled engineers on hand in a special lecture theatre to give demonstrations and practical advice on all aspects of modelling and machining.

During the event, visitors will be able to buy the latest products in the exhibition's special retail village area.

Already many of the biggest and best-known companies in modelling have pledged their support to the event. Chester UK, Chronos, Warco, CML Distribution, Helger Racing, Schumacher Racing and Amerang, are among those exhibiting and organising demonstrations.
