ENGLAND suffered their worst humiliation in 22 years when they trailed home last in the British Isles International Bowls series at Rock Park, Llandrindod Wells, last night.

Champions in 2001 and 2002, England received the wooden spoon for the first time since 1982, at Ayr, after crashing to an 18-4 defeat by Wales in their final match.

Scotland took the title for the first time in four years, with 53 points, ahead of defending champions Wales (31 points), Ireland (26) and England (22).

Kidderminster's Grant Burgess was one of only two winning skips for England across the six rinks.

The Gilt Edge ace powered to his second successive win in the series when he took the scalp of Hereford-based 2000 World Indoor Singles champion Robert Weale 30-20.

Burgess amassed 21 shots over eight ends, pounding Weale with scores of 3, 3, 4, 6, 2 and 3 to lead 30-16. He completed the championship joint-top of the English skips, scoring two wins in three games to share the honours with Ian Band of Devon.
