THE WI Country Markets Limited name has been changed to Country Markets Limited.
The decision was made by the National Federation of Women's Institutes to discontinue the WI part of the name.
Lynne Jakeman, secretary of Evesham Country Market, said: The NFWI is a registered charity whereas Country Markets Limited is a non-profit making co-operative business. Its producers, in 480 markets throughout the England, Wales and the Channel Islands, grow, bake and make home-produced goods ranging from traditional cakes, preserves and crafts to unusual plants and vegetables."
WI Markets originated during the First World War to provide fresh produce throughout the country. Lewes in East Sussex, which opened in 1919, is considered to be the first official WI Market. Now these markets can be found in many towns and villages and increasingly at Farmers' Markets.
Mrs Jakeman said: "A new Gifts-to-Go scheme has been introduced to allow lovers of our homemade jams, marmalades and chutneys or special fruit cakes to send Country Markets finest goodies to any destination."
