A business consultant who admitted indecently assaulting a woman he contacted through the internet has been spared jail after she spoke up for him in court.

Andrew Young, aged 56, of Manor Close, Honeybourne, was made the subject of a two-year community rehabilitation order.

He was also ordered to take counselling for his alcohol problem and to undertake a domestic violence intervention programme.

Ian Ball, prosecuting, said the assault happened after Young had been drinking heavily last Christmas. The victim came into court to say that she did not want Young to go to prison because he was the sole carer for his 15-year-old son.

Mark Heywood, defending, said that while the offence was violent and demeaning, Young was in turmoil after drinking excessively. He had no previous convictions. Judge Andrew Geddes said Young had brought shame upon himself after an exemplary life. He was fortunate that his victim did not wish him to be imprisoned.
