BOBBIES are set to get extra help on the beat when 12 extra Community Support Officers start patrols.

The 12 will be spread across the West Mercia area, including two more for South Worcestershire and one extra for Herefordshire. There are currently 12 CSOs in Herefordshire division and 12 in South Worcestershire.

CSOs do not have the same powers as a full-fledged police officer but are seen as a "visible patrolling presence and an effective crime deterrent, especially with regard to anti-social behaviour", according to the Home Office.

As well as being able to issue fixed penalty tickets for minor anti-social behaviour, they can demand details of someone committing anti-social behaviour offences and confiscate alcohol being consumed in a public place.

"CSOs have become invaluable members of the team since joining the force last November," said Supt John Molloy.

"We are delighted to put a further 12 CSOs on streets."
