A ROLLICKING evening of favourite songs from the good old days of popular music hall has led to Bromsgrove getting its second ornate town sign.

The sign is situated on a prominent grass bank near the junction of Kidderminster Road and Willow Road and was unveiled and officially presented to Bromsgrove District Council last Friday.

The sign has been gifted to the town by the Bromsgrove Society, who commissioned the first one on the peak of Stratford Road last year.

As before the picture features a scene of Bromsgrove by the well-known Worcester artist David Birtwhistle. He was among the guests at the short unveiling ceremony. The guests were welcomed by society chairman Des Clarke.

Mr Birtwhistle has waived his fee for the use of his painting.

Society president Graham Reddie said the money for the sign had been raised from a concert entitled Roll Out the Barrel, which was held last November at the Spadesbourne Suite. The concert was given by the nationally acclaimed Famous Music Company.

He said the proprietors, Terry Bradford and Sussie Arvesen, neighbours of Mr Clarke at Lydiate Ash, had told him how good the first sign looked.

On being told that cash was the only stumbling block to the society providing a second sign the show-biz pair immediately agreed to stage a show.

Meanwhile, Bromsgrove Society holds its annual meeting at Avoncroft museum on Thursday, July 8. On display will be a selection of work by the late Mary Long, who died last year aged 89.

The work includes her inspirational drawing of flowers, birds and plants to be found along the banks of the Spadesbourne brook.

The meeting starts at 7.30pm.
