AFTER two weeks of visits to friendly rivals Evesham and Wyre Mill Sailing Clubs, members of the Arden club at Defford returned to their regular programme of events on home water.

Sunday's first race was the first in the Ladies Series and light winds made conditions difficult.

Jane Smee, helming an Enter-prise, having taken the lead at the start capitalised on the clear winds to take first place.

The second outing was a pursuit race and, with the wind coming in light puffs from all directions, it proved a frustrating time for helms and crews.

However, the concentration of Niall Campbell and Smee, back in her normal position as crew, was sufficient to overhaul the earlier starters.

The final result saw Campbell and Smee (Enterprise) in first ahead of Keith Stevens (Comet) and third-placed Andrew Potts (Solo).

The third and final race was the normally long distance race to Strensham Lock and back. However, in view of the weather conditions it was sailed over a shorter course.

The Comet of Stevens and the GP14 of David Appleby, crewed by Simon Hall, showed early promise. Once again, though, Campbell and Smee mastered the conditions and final positions were a repeat of the previous result.

Many of the club's members are travelling to this weekend's Saundersfoot Regatta.

On their return they will be trying to infect others with the sailing bug at the second Open Day on Sunday, June 13 from 11am.
