THE Birmingham Rep presents a new play by Simon Gray, starring Edward Fox and Peter Bowles and directed by Harold Pinter next month.

The Old Masters explores the world of the international art market using real events and characters.

Set in Mussolini's Italy in 1937, the famous art historian Bernard Berenson, played by Edward Fox, meets notorious art dealer Joseph Duveen, portrayed by Peter Bowles, in an explosive encounter at the Villa - Tatti outside Florence.

The ninth play in Simon Gray and Harold Pinter's long-standing writer/director relationship, The Old Masters will transfer to the West End after its Birmingham world premiere.

Edward Fox has had a long and varied career in television in film, including The Day Of The Jackal, A Bridge Too Far, A Passage To India, Edward & Mrs Simpson, The Importance of Being Earnest and Daniel Deronda.

Peter Bowles, best known for his part in the long-running TV series To The Manor Born, has also starred in Rumpole Of The Bailey and The Avengers.

His theatre credits include The Entertainer, Present Laughter and The Royal Family.

The cast also includes Barbara Jefford, Sally Dexter and Steven Pacey.

The Old Masters plays from Friday, June 4, to Saturday, June 19, with performances at 7.30pm and 2.30pm matinees on Thursdays and Saturdays.
