A Kidderminster teenager who claimed he "didn't have time" to do unpaid work for the community has been given another chance to avoid custody.

Brendan Flaherty was ordered to do 100 hours community service when he pleaded guilty at Worcester Crown Court in February to burglary.

Glyn Samuel, for the probation service, said Flaherty had failed to do a single hour and had also disregarded an 18-month community rehabilitation order by cutting off his curfew tag.

But Recorder Elizabeth Darbyshire made him the subject of a 12-month drug treatment and testing order after hearing his girlfriend was four-months pregnant and he had regressed to using drugs again.

Revoking the community punishment order, she warned Flaherty, aged 19, of Salisbury Drive, Habberley estate, that it would be custody if he failed drug treatment.

When the case first came before the court, it was said that Flaherty had a £300-a-week drug habit and he had resorted to crime to get money.

He had smashed the porch window of a Kidderminster house but did not try to break in any further. He was arrested because he cut his hand and three spots of blood were found on the glass.
