A PUBLIC pay phone at Gilvers Lane, Brotheridge Green, near Upton-upon-Severn, has been earmarked for removal after a BT survey of five pay phones in the area.

The increased use of mobile phones has led to a decline in the use of pay phones and two of Upton's five phones are now losing money.

Town councillors heard that two phones, at Tunnel Hill and Old Street, would certainly remain, but two others, at Queensmead and Hanley Road car park, were under review.

Members had no objection to the removal of the phone at Brotheridge Green, which they heard was little used and frequently vandalised, but they were strongly opposed to the loss of the phone at Hanley Road.

One phone has already been removed from the car park and the town council has previously objected to the removal of the other.

"I think we should suggest very strongly that the one remaining at Hanley Road must be kept, along with the two others," said Simon Wilkinson.

Members of the public have until Wednesday, June 16 to make representations to BT about the removal of the phone at Gilvers Lane.
