Bennett was a then club record buy of £30,000 from rivals Bromsgrove Rovers in January 1999 and proved a goal-scoring menace to Conference opponents in the title-winning season.

The ex-England semi-professional international signed a two-year deal at Aggborough in the summer of 2000 but was one of a number of players transfer listed in early 2001.

The former West Bromwich Albion young professional, who is capable of dangerous solo runs from midfield, bucked up his ideas and made himself difficult to leave out of the side.

A stunning eight goals in as many league games in season 2001/02 showed he can mix it with the best in Division Three and he signed a new two-and-a-half year deal in December 2001.

Season 2002-03 was a stop-start affair for Bennett but he flourished again with the return of Jan Molby, scoring crucial goals in the 2003/04 FA Cup run.

A quick player with endless energy, he was handed a new two-year contract in the summer of 2004.
