THE most significant Wyre Forest election for decades has moved into top gear now the final list of more than 100 candidates has been announced for the crucial June 10 vote.

The 113 would-be councillors are battling for all 42 seats on Wyre Forest District Council with a vote which has the potential to bring a major change of administration.

Voters will also be asked to select West Midlands representatives in the European Parliament on the same day.

The district elections will be a major litmus test of the public's support for Health Concern which has run the council for the last two years.

It went into last year's elections with 21 seats which gave it a ruling majority. Despite losing two seats it retained control of the council.

It lost a further four seats following three defections to Conservatives and one councillor leaving the district.

Closest rivals are the Tories, who gained two seats at last May's district poll and currently have 11 members. The party is putting up enough candidates to, in theory, secure every seat while Health Concern has put forward 27 names for the poll.

Labour is contesting 15 out of the 17 wards in the district with 24 candidates while the Liberal Party has nine candidates in the party's Kidderminster heartlands of Broadwaters, Greenhill and Offmore and Comberton, where it presently has six councillors.

The Liberal Democrats, who have two members on the council, have put forward seven candidates while there are three people standing as Independents.

Councillors not seeking re-election are Leonard Barton (Health Concern, Franche), Kimberly Poller (Health Concern, Franche), Anne Mace (Health Concern, Oldington and Foley Park) and Ron White (Independent, Wribbenhall).

The last time all seats on the district council were up for grabs was in 1979, a year after a review of boundary lines. Further boundary changes come into effect for the first time for next month's election. Changes include turning Bewdley ward into Bewdley and Arley and giving it an extra councillor, and the joining of Blakedown and Chaddesley.

Not enough candidates came forward to warrant an election on Rock Parish Council. Of the 13 seats, just 10 people were nominated so three new members will be co-opted by the council.

A single seat is being contested in a by-election for the Wolverley ward of Wolverley and Cookley Parish Council. There are two candidates, Conrad Bourne representing Labour and Malcolm Hazlewood for the Conservatives.
