Worcestershire car industry firms are being urged to get scrapping to fight the rising price of steel.

Midlands automotive industry pressure group Accelerate is calling on firms to work together to sell their scrap back to steel producers following a survey in which every company reported a rise in prices.

The survey also revealed 73 per cent of firms had had to wait longer for raw materials and 58 per cent said steel that was previously available was no longer easy to source.

Reinforced

"The results of the survey reinforce exactly what the industry has been saying for months," said Rob Lott, project manager at Accelerate.

"China's insatiable appetite for steel has had a major knock-on effort to the domestic market and given the producers the necessary leverage to push prices through the roof."

"There is no one solution that you can wave the magic wand at and it is more about working together and being more innovative with purchasing and recycling methods."
