ONE of the games of the season for Bewdley Town saw them eventually secure a 4-3 win at Cradley Town Reserves in Division One South last Thursday.

They went a long way to securing a top-five position with substitute John Lawley's 30-yard second-half rocket, only his second goal in 15 years at the club.

In the first period, Bewdley showed great character to hit back from a goal down on three occasions against talented young opposition.

They fell behind to a penalty and Ervine McMahon levelled after a great four-man move, only for Cradley to edge ahead again.

But the home lead only lasted five minutes as Steve Holt and Chris Hough combined to give Gav Smith the chance to bury Bewdley's second goal.

Cradley forged ahead again before the two teams went in level at the interval as top scorer Hough found the net with a 10-yard drive.

Boss Craig Payton introduced the more experienced Lawley for his son Oliver at left-back and player-of-the-season contender Dale Evans for Rob Turford.

It helped Bewdley plug the gaps at the back and J Lawley eventually secured the three points with his great strike though Cradley deserved a draw.

Bewdley then won 2-1 at Bustleholme Reserves on Saturday with goals from McMahon and Evans.

They were glad to see sweeper John Hardiman only yellow carded for a handball on the goal-line which led to Bustleholme's only goal.

Monday's game with Malvern Town Reserves has been rescheduled for Tuesday but Bewdley firstly visit Blackheath on Saturday.

Payton has praised ultra-organised team secretary Mark Simms as "one of the club's best signings".
