A MAN was rushed to hospital after a fire broke out in a caravan at a Stourport lorry park.

The occupant, 46-year-old Ian Campbell, suffered burns as a result of the blaze, at A and P Transport in Sandy Lane, and required hospital treatment.

The fire was spotted by a passer-by and two people helped smash the glass front door and wake Mr Campbell, at about 11.30pm on Thursday night.

He suffered burns to his upper arms, shoulders and right leg from the fire, which was attended by firefighters from Stourport and Kidderminster.

Leading firefighter Tony Wilks, of Kidderminster Fire Station, said: "The fire was in the kitchen area which, we believe, was started by food being cooked on the grill and then being left unattended.

"We believe he may have fallen asleep in the lounge. Somebody saw the smoke coming out of the caravan and kicked the door in. The fire was very severe."

Leading firefighter Wilks said the fire caused about 30 per cent damage to the caravan.

He added: "It was all up the cupboards and the flames went outside through a vent. Two firefighters with breathing apparatus went into the caravan from Stourport and put the fire out."

Mr Campbell, from Martley, spent three nights a week keeping watch on the yard for A and P, a spokeswoman for the road haulage firm said.

She said: "An employee of A and P Transport heard the fire alarm going off and saw smoke coming from the caravan and summoned help."

Mr Campbell was first taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital but later transferred to the burns unit at Selly Oak. His condition was stable.
