A NEW monthly Farmers' Market is due to get under way at Brightwells auction yards in Tenbury Wells next month.

Certified a farmers' market under the National Association of Farmers' Markets and funded by the National Lottery New Opportunities Scheme, the new event is expected to attract food and drink producers from across the region.

The Tenbury market will be run under the umbrella of the Worcestershire Farmers' Market Group, a non-profit making organisation run by farmers working in partnership with representatives from local councils and market operators.

It was set up in 2000 to support the growth and safeguard the future of many rural businesses by providing a regular opportunity for producers to sell direct to the public.

Four Saturdays have been lined up for the first few markets - May 22, June 26, July 24 and August 28 - with hopes of success leading to anticipation of more dates.

Products on sale will include seasonal goods, breads, cakes, preserves, wines and plants.

Tenbury's previous Saturday market beside the Pump Rooms floundered through lack of regular support, but organisers are now hoping to bounce back and prove that demand for good fresh locally-produced food is still there.
